Patellofemoral Knee Pain

Patellofemoral knee pain is one of the most common disorders of the knee. It is caused by mal-tracking of the patella (kneecap) as you bend and move your leg. This incorrect positioning results in irritation and inflammation behind the patella which causes pain.
Patellofemoral pain occurs as a result of:
- Muscle weakness of:
- Gluteal group
- Quadriceps
- Hamstrings
- Knee valgus (“knock-knees”)
- Tight structures:
- TFL and ITB (band of tissue on the side of your thigh)
- Quadriceps
- Pronated foot position (flat feet)

Common symptoms include:
- Pain located behind or around the kneecap
- Pain with:
- Repetitive loading e.g. jumping, running, stairs, cycling, squatting etc.
- Prolonged sitting
- Feeling of warmth in the kneecap +/- swelling

Treatment and management is dependent on the individual’s presentation and may include:
- Strengthening exercises
- Taping
- Soft tissue release
- Load management
- Stretches
- Movement analysis and correction
- Recommendation of specific footwear or orthotics
